Australia 2023

Exploring Melbourne, Sydney, and Cairns

Sydney

We started off our adventure in the grand city of Sydney Australia. We stayed in a small house at Avoca Beach, a gorgeous ocean and beach close to the city. Being that Australia is on the Southern hemisphere of the planet, our seasons are completely opposite from one another. We visted Australia during our summer which turned out to be their winter. Though despite it being their coldest season, temperatures were around 70-80 degrees which was warm for us considering my family is from Washington. We got to swim everyday, enjoy walks along the beach and play in the sand. Because it was winter and it wasn't really a tourist season, we had most of the beach to ourselves.

We stayed at Avoca Beach for around a week, spending our next week in the actual city of Sydney. We got to see the famous opera house, beautiful parks, and stunning city attractions such as the Taronga Zoo. I found the city to be beautiful, clean, and overall a positive atmosphere as there was always lots to interact with.

Melbourne

This was the main reason why we traveled to Australia as my mom's side of the family originated from there. We had relatives who lived in the Melbourne area which we hadn't seen them for years. It was nice to reunite with them and have our family treat us to fun Australian experiences. Some of these experiences included...

Going to an Australian football game, designed like traditional american football crossed with rugby. You're allowed to kick the ball and tackle your teammates by crawling on their shoulders. It was more physical than American football and was quite fun to watch.

Going to a museum and seeing all different sorts of artifacts and attractions such as Australian history and dinosaur fossils. The one that caught my eye the most was the fossil of a Triceratops.

Cairns

Known for being the tropical part of Australia. It is home to the Great Barrier Reef which my Mom, Brother, and I visited. My Father left for home after Melbourne to go back to work so it was just us three on this adventure.

The weather was significantly warmer here as it was in the 80-85's compared to Melbourne which was closer to 50-60 degrees. We had to travel by plane to get there as it was across the Australian continent. Some of the activites we did in Cairns was visit the Great Barrier Reef, explore a reptile zoo in which we got to see Crocodiles, and hike through the tropical forests to see different types of flora and fauna not native back home. crocodile jumping out of the water author and mother underwater holding hands with coral reef beneath them view of forest landscape during a sunny day turtle swimming underwater between coral structures
